Vehicle Side

A 270-degree awning that wraps from the side of the vehicle around the back, covering 83 square feet. It is freestanding, so it opens in under a minute without pegging out, and three legs drop from inside the arms when the weather turns. The fabric is 600D flame-resistant ripstop, and the three main arms carry dimmable LED bars that run white or red off USB.

/WHY IT IS HERE

The photographs on this page are ours, shot on an 80 Series over a night on the river, and so is the review in the gallery: mounting it, opening it on our own, and what the legs and the arm lights do.

The red LED frame is the reason it is in the shop. Light that lets you find things without wrecking everyone's night vision, built into the arms instead of clipped on afterwards.

Flame resistance is the other reason. Most awning fabric is coated polyester and you learn to keep the stove away from it.

/KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
  • Driver or Passenger is permanent. You pick the side it mounts and opens over at checkout, and it cannot be swapped afterwards. Decide which side of the vehicle you live on: the door you cook at, not the one you park against.
  • 54 lb. That is a two-person lift onto a roof, once. After that it stays there.
  • It needs t-track. Load bars, a platform or a rack with t-track. The two brackets are included, but a bare factory crossbar is not enough.
  • On a Sherpa rack it bolts to the Sherpa HD awning mount. Sherpa sell those one at a time, so order two, one per bracket.
  • Packed it is 94 in long. Measure your rack before you measure anything else.
  • The LED bars want USB power from the vehicle. There is no battery in the awning.
  • Annex Walls and the Windbreaker are sold separately. The velcro strip for them runs the full perimeter, and they appear in the last photographs on this page, but neither comes with the awning.
  • The Cliffhanger organiser is included.
  • Reign do not publish how far it extends when open, or a wind rating.
/WHICH ONE

The bigger of two. This one wraps the back of the vehicle and carries three legs; the 180 runs along one side, weighs 45 lb and costs $250 less. Take the 270 if you cook and sit behind the vehicle, the 180 if you only ever want shade down one flank.
