Toyota 80 Series Interior Build by Wasatch Overland

Rear of the red Land Cruiser with both Wasatch Overland drawers pulled out, a mountain valley behind

Sponsored by Wasatch Overland, Redarc, LiTime and Equipt Expedition Outfitters.

New on YouTube: a full walkthrough of the interior in my 1990 Land Cruiser HDJ81, built by Wasatch Overland. Thirteen minutes on every drawer, panel and system in the back, and how it holds up on the trail.

Wasatch Overland built it in April. The photos below start at the install and run through September.

/THE TRUCK: 1990 HDJ81

  • 1990 Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ81, right-hand drive
  • 1HDT turbo diesel, automatic
  • 37x12.50R17 Mickey Thompson Baja Legend EXP
  • Alu-Cab pop-top

It is my daily, my camp and my mobile studio for Roaming Lost shoots across the PNW. The interior had to work for all three.

/THE WASATCH OVERLAND INSTALL

The build happened at Wasatch Overland's shop. The power system went together on the bench as a single plate before it went into the truck.

/80 SERIES GULLWING WINDOWS

Both rear side windows are gullwings. Each one lifts on struts and opens into a storage box with a shelf and a red LED strip under the lid. One of them holds the Redarc RedVision display.

/REAR SEAT STORAGE

One side of the rear seat carries the hard case with my camera gear, plus two cubbies: tools, truck fluids and filters in the bottom one, personal stuff like toiletries in the top. The other side is a dog bed for River.

In the video: rear seat at 4:57.

/80 SERIES REAR DRAWER SYSTEM

Two drawers across the floor. Above them, an aluminum case on one side and a fridge in its own cabinet on the other. The lower tailgate drops flat.

/POWER: REDARC & LITIME

  • Redarc BCDC Alpha 50
  • Redarc TVMS Rogue
  • Redarc RedVision Pro display
  • LiTime 12.8V 320Ah LiFePO4 house battery

RedVision first showed up in Field Notes in 2020, when Redarc sent one of the first US systems out for a test. That post is here.
